Chapter Seven

Sidney smiled down at Mrs. Lorenson who hummed a little ditty as she pulled him along the sidewalk and over to the library. An old soul much like himself, he mused. Well, not quite as old as him. Although she’d never know that.

She snuck a look up at him, merriment in her brown eyes. “I so appreciate the work you did on my cabinets, Sidney dear.” She called back to Ally who walked a few steps behind them. “We’re so lucky Sidney made Burberry his home.”

He patted her hand. “You’re welcome, Mrs. Lorenson. Anything for you.”

She giggled and let out a snort. Since the library was across the street from the Tea Haven, it took them less than three minutes to get to the front door. He held it open for Mrs. Lorenson and Ally to pass through; the latter hesitating and shooting him a questioning look.

The bright sunshine began to fade as the yellow orb dipped behind the trees. He liked the earlier darkness during the winter. He’d be able to move around town quicker once the sun set.

He placed a hand on Ally’s back giving her the shove she needed to get through the door. Not that he didn’t understand her doubts she still had about her parents and the great-aunts, but they only had an hour to gather more information.

The library was a two-story wood frame house built in the 1960s. At some point the town had bought it and converted to Burberry’s library. As the mayor had pointed out, thanks to him and Ally, it was now in need of a librarian. But not for the reasons the mayor thought.

He heard voices coming from the second story where the mayor and her daughter had put together a display of the town’s history. Not one for history since he’d spent most of his in a Council prison cell, he’d yet to venture to the library’s upstairs. He hadn’t spent too much time in the downstairs either other than to search it a few weeks ago. Ally loved movies and Netflix and Chinese takeout. So, of course he did too. He chose to snuggle over catching up on reading.

He cupped Mrs. Lorenson’s elbow and guided her up the stairs. She pushed on the railing and it made a squeak as the wood gave in to her weight. “Maybe you could put this railing on your list of things to fix, dear.”

Her confidence in him made him smile again. After he’d been released and on the paranormal version of parole, he’d wanted nothing more than to get lost in a big city where no one knew his name. After meeting Ally and spending the last few weeks in Burberry, he couldn’t imagine spending his days anywhere else.

At the top of the stairs they turned to find Mayor Henry and Samuel deep in a discussion about the Civil War and Burberry’s ties to it, if any. Samuel didn’t look happy with his findings.

As soon as Samuel caught a glance of them, he stomped over.
